What causes stretch marks?

Each of us have several layers of skin, which are typically very “elastic,” but can sometimes be stretched too far during periods of rapid weight gain or growth. In addition, cortisol, a hormone that naturally occurs in the body, and is important to normal body function, can be overproduced at certain times, reducing the elasticity of our skin and causing it to expand unevenly.

Who gets stretch marks?

Anyone can get stretch marks, but they are more common for patients who:

• Have a family history of stretch marks
• Have been Pregnant
• Going through puberty
• Gain or lose weight quickly
• Use corticosteroid medications
• Undergoing breast enlargement
• Suffers from Cushing’s syndrome or various other genetic disorders

What are the types of stretch marks?

Some may have dark, indented streaks in the skin, while others have bright streaks that typically fade over time. They may be red, black, blue or even purple. Most stretch marks appear on the abdomen, buttocks, breasts and thighs. They may cover a small or very large area of the body.

Can stretch marks be removed?

Yes. Many can be reduced significantly with treatments that will revitalize your skin and help your body produce new healthy skin.

How are stretch marks treated?

The Icon uses fractional laser beams, causing the body to generate new skin cells. What are stretch mark treatments like?

Most patients need 3-5 sessions to achieve optimal results. Each treatment will involve application of the laser light over the affected area. Patients may experience some slight discomfort from the treatments, which can be relieved with cooling creams. Temporary redness and swelling are not uncommon after the procedure, but most patients can resume normal daily activities with no downtime.
