Testosterone is almost always talked about as a men’s hormone. That framing does a disservice to a lot of women.
Women produce testosterone too, just in smaller amounts than men. And when those levels decline, which they do naturally with age and particularly around perimenopause and menopause, the effects can be significant: low energy, decreased libido, difficulty building muscle, brain fog, mood changes, and a general feeling of diminishment that’s hard to put into words.
Testosterone replacement therapy for women has become one of the more requested services at ThinMD MedSpa in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach, and the reason is simple: when it’s done correctly, with proper testing and physician oversight, it can produce a meaningful shift in how women feel and function.
This post covers what TRT for women actually involves, who it’s designed for, how it works at ThinMD, and what the research says.
Your body produces testosterone in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It plays a role in energy levels, muscle maintenance, bone density, mood, focus, and sex drive. It’s not a small role.
The problem is that testosterone levels in women begin declining in the mid-30s and continue to drop through perimenopause and beyond. By the time many women reach their 40s or 50s, their testosterone is a fraction of what it was in their 20s.
Most conventional medicine doesn’t test for testosterone in women unless there’s a specific clinical reason. As a result, many women experiencing the symptoms of low testosterone are told that what they’re feeling is “just aging”, or they’re given antidepressants, sleep aids, or other interventions that address symptoms without addressing the root.
Testosterone replacement, when appropriate and physician-supervised, goes to the source.
The symptoms of low testosterone in women often overlap with those of other hormone imbalances, which is one of the reasons comprehensive bloodwork matters before starting any hormone therapy program.
Common signs that testosterone may be low:
None of these symptoms alone confirms low testosterone, they can have multiple causes. But when several of them are present together and conventional approaches haven’t helped, a hormone panel often reveals something worth addressing.
The principles are the same, optimize hormone levels to restore function, but the specifics differ.
Women need significantly lower doses of testosterone than men. The goal is to bring levels back into an optimal range for a woman, not to a male range. Dosing is calibrated carefully based on your bloodwork, not on a standard formula.
At ThinMD, we use bioidentical testosterone for women. Bioidentical means the hormone molecules match the structure of what your body produces naturally. This matters because your hormone receptors are designed to work with your own hormones.
Women’s TRT at our Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach locations is offered primarily through hormone pellets, a delivery method that provides a consistent, steady release of testosterone over several months without the peaks and valleys associated with injections or the daily variability of creams. Some patients do well with other delivery methods depending on their situation, which is something we discuss during your consultation.
Not every woman with low energy or decreased libido is automatically a candidate for testosterone therapy. At ThinMD, candidacy is determined by your labs, your symptoms, and a thorough evaluation by Dr. Anthony Capasso or our physician-led team.
Generally speaking, TRT for women is most commonly considered for:
Women with certain health conditions or on specific medications may not be appropriate candidates. This is exactly why a physician evaluation comes first, always.
Dr. Anthony Capasso, our board-certified Medical Director, has been recognized as one of Jacksonville Florida’s leading longevity physicians. Before any hormone therapy at ThinMD, the process starts with testing.
Here’s how the process works:
Step 1: Hormone screening. We draw comprehensive labs that include your testosterone levels, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, thyroid, and other relevant markers. We don’t look at testosterone in isolation, we look at the full hormonal picture.
Step 2: Results review. We go through your results with you, in plain language. You’ll understand what’s low, what’s optimal, and what the clinical picture looks like before we recommend anything.
Step 3: Protocol design. Your protocol is built around your specific numbers and your goals. The dose of testosterone recommended for you is based on your labs and your physiology, not a one-size-fits-all template.
Step 4: Pellet insertion (if pellets are the right choice). The insertion is an in-office procedure that takes only a few minutes. The area is numbed, the pellet is placed subcutaneously, and a small bandage applied. You go home the same day.
Step 5: Follow-up and monitoring. After your first round, we bring you back for follow-up bloodwork to see how your body responded and adjust from there.
Most women at our Jacksonville Beach and Jacksonville locations begin noticing shifts in energy, mood, and sleep quality within the first few weeks. Full effects of hormone pellets typically develop over four to six weeks as levels stabilize.
It’s worth noting that hormone optimization is not a switch that flips overnight. Some women notice changes quickly; others take a full cycle before they fully feel the difference. Follow-up labs help us track progress and make adjustments if needed.
Testosterone therapy for women has been studied for decades, and the weight of the evidence supports its use in appropriate candidates for improving libido, energy, mood, and muscle maintenance.
A 2019 global consensus statement published in the journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, involving 48 experts from multiple countries, concluded that testosterone therapy in women has demonstrated evidence of benefit for low sexual interest and arousal, and that the available evidence supports its safety when used at physiological doses.
That said, all hormone therapy should be supervised by a physician who is monitoring levels and adjusting as needed. Self-administered or unmonitored testosterone use carries real risks, not because testosterone itself is dangerous at appropriate doses, but because dosing and monitoring matter enormously.
Patients who complete TRT at ThinMD in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach frequently describe outcomes across several areas of their lives. The words we hear most often:
“I feel like myself again.”
More specifically: more consistent energy through the day, improved motivation at work and in their personal life, a return of interest in their relationships, better response to exercise, and an overall sense of engagement with life that had quietly faded.
These are not trivial changes. For many women, the shift that comes with appropriate hormone optimization affects everything from their career performance to their relationships to how they feel in their own body.
Is testosterone therapy safe for women? Bioidentical testosterone therapy at physician-monitored doses has been used for decades and has a well-established track record in appropriate candidates. The key word is “appropriate”, candidacy is determined by bloodwork and a physician evaluation, and dosing is carefully calibrated.
Will TRT make me masculine? At the doses prescribed for women, which are much lower than doses used in men, testosterone therapy is not associated with masculinizing effects when properly monitored. This is a common concern and a legitimate one to raise during your consultation.
Do I need ongoing monitoring? Yes. Hormone levels are rechecked at follow-up appointments. This ensures your levels remain in the optimal range and allows us to adjust your protocol if needed.
Can I take TRT if I’m on birth control or other medications? Some medications and medical conditions affect whether TRT is appropriate. This is assessed during your evaluation. Always disclose all current medications and health history.
What’s the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones? Bioidentical hormones match the molecular structure of the hormones your body produces naturally. Synthetic hormones have a modified structure. Bioidentical is what we use at ThinMD.
How often do I need to come in? For pellet therapy, most women return every three to four months. Follow-up bloodwork is included in our monitoring process.
Does ThinMD offer other hormone therapies for women? Yes. Depending on your bloodwork and goals, your protocol may include estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, or thyroid support in addition to testosterone. We look at your whole hormonal picture, not a single marker.
If you’ve been told your labs are “normal” but you still don’t feel normal, your hormone levels deserve a closer look.
